NEIGHBORHOOD HISTORY

La Roma The history of this intriguing neighborhood dates back to the colonial era, when its first buildings were constructed (i.e., the church of La Romita, 17th century). Nevertheless, its true splendor came during the beginning of the 20th century, where it became one of the most important neighborhoods of the city. Its streets and buildings, constructed whith European influence, have been witnesses of many of Mexico´s social and political events in history: from Porfirian parades to revolutionary battles.

Nowadays, the neighborhood continues to reinvent and rediscover itself, while respecting and embracing its past. The neighborhood cultural life, more active than ever, places la Roma as one of the most important neighborhood in the aspect. Many of its buildings, carefully restored, have been declared Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA for its spanish acronym). Brick itself is catalogued as a cultural landmark by this institute.
